Innsbruck with its various names, such as "Innsbruck Olympic City" or "Capital of the Alps" is a special winter destination that can offer more than you expected.

It can combine nightlife, entertainment, sightseeing and of course easy and free access to the surrounding ski resorts. In Winter you can find here cheaper accommodation than other winter destinations and you can easily book rooms for just a few days and not the usual Saturday / Saturday that most of Austria's alpine resorts apply.

Let's take a closer look at your skiing options and how to get there free of charge.

Innsbruck's Ski Resorts:

Patscherkofel is located on the south side of Innsbruck in the village of Igls. By bus from Innsbruck you will need only 15΄ to get there. The daily card costs € 38.00 (2019) to enjoy skiing on 18km of slopes.

In addition to being a major tourist destination, Nordkette or else "Innsbruck's Ornament" features 15 km of ski slopes for winter enthusiasts, and is initially accessible by train from the city center.

Free access to both ski resorts is provided by the “J” bus line as long as you are properly dressed and have ski or snowboard equipment.

Other Ski Resorts:

For more demanding skiers it is a good choice to visit also the surrounding ski resorts. Free shuttle service is provided if you have the appropriate equipment and a welcome card from your hotel.

  • Stubaier Glacier

  • Schlick 2000

  • Axamer Lizum

For the following ski resorts a free shuttle service is provided if you have the appropriate equipment and a welcome card from your hotel. A reservation is required if you need a free shuttle to the train station.

  • Kühtai

  • Rangger Köpfl

  • Mütterer Alm

Bus routes start from several central points of the city and in front of its major hotels. More details you can find here.

HIGHLIGHT: OLYMPIC ICE TRACK

Bobsleigh © TVB Innsbruck / Mario Webhofer

An incredible experience will surely be sledding on the Olympic Ice track just outside Innsbruck. You can enjoy a ride down the ice chute in one of our original guest bobsleighs (5 passengers + 1 driver) and experience first-hand the fascination of this exhilarating winter sport. During the 800 metre ride down the ice track, which includes an elevation drop of 100 metres, you reach speeds of up to 90 km/h as you race around 10 bends and the 360-degree ‘Kreisel’ corner. The price per person is only € 35.00, would you try it?

Getting to Innsbruck from Munich Airport!

After arriving to Munich Airport you have 4 options to get to Innsbruck: bus, train, taxi or car rentals. I usually prefer the train or the bus because they are the cheapest and most convenient choices. You can check tickets and prices at OMIO, at the link below.

Dining!

Most restaurants in Innsbruck close early and have no continuous opening hours. As a greek living in Austria, when I visit the city I prefer greek cuisine. My choices at city centre are Mr. Gyros (for a snack) or Restaurant Posidonas which is all day long open and till 24:00.
